Distance

It's going to be a process now. Moving away, physically further from activities and locations which consume my time. Work is now approximately 50.8 miles away. It now takes over 30 minutes by vehicle to visit the nearest close friend. The cost of unleaded gasoline is hovering around $3.60 per gallon. The nearest grocery store being on the other side of many miles of rough road.

Electricity is considered to be pretty important to people these days. The nearest power pole is over a mile away by road, 0.7 miles in a straight line. Water comes from the ground, conveniently via hand pump. Phone lines are as far as power and cell phone signal is nonexistent for a dozen miles or more in every direction.

Is this too far away to live? What does the distance mean and in what ways will it alter my life and the way I function. There are obvious things that will be impossible or damn near and other things that will absorb more of my time because of the lack of conveniences. There are many foreseen problems that could be prevented due to excellent planning and foresight, but there are other problems that may be irreparable despite the best efforts. Dead battery, car won't start? Unless I have another battery with a charge, I'm done. Huge snowstorm and truck gets stuck, SOL big time.

The distance is a powerful thing. It's there and it's impossible to argue with. Like time, we can't change it by thinking hard, but maybe adapt a little with inventions. I like powerful, immovable objects. To stay connected to them puts me at the root of the world, a place where life is immediate and raw.

Justified? I don't know. I'll reference the evidence after I finish providing some. There is no opinion I can invent that will trump the cold hard fact. It is what is and it is nothing else.
